The trick of being a great magician is in making the audience believe that what you are doing cannot be done normally and there is some element of the unnatural or supernatural involved. In order to achieve this, the magician not only has to be extremely skilful, but also be a great actor.

He has to firstly believe strongly in his own tricks and think that he is performing magic. Then, he can use some of the well known techniques used by magicians to make the audience believe the same.

One such thing which a magician must keep in mind is that his eye movements dictate the eye movements of the audience. If he does not want his audience to look somewhere, then he also must not look there.

Also, he must perform the trick of sleight of hand slowly and gently. The magician might speak about the quickness of the hand so as to mislead spectators since they will be watching carefully for any quick and swift movement made by the magician. But by speaking fast and moving slowly, the magician is able to distract the attention of the audience and thus perform his/her trick. Thus, the audience which is looking for a fast movement fails to notice the normal, easygoing motions by which the trick is really done.
